Relaxation and Nothingness was originally conceived by Denise Hawrysio as a live Zoom intervention/performance for MOCA London during the early days of the first Coronavirus lockdown of 2020. The gallery was beginning to experiment with alternative ways of engaging audiences online, and challenged artists to do something live online. The live version was silent, but afterwards Denise invited me to compose a soundtrack, and this is the version that was later projected on the gallery windows (see below).
"Relaxation and Nothingness is closer to painting than to traditional narrative. It exploits the specificities of time and technology, almost making itself, in the tradition of structural filmmaking. At the same time, it draws on the sensory, psychological, and social dimensions of the virtual world. Like much of my work, the intention is to abstract from the visible world in order to transform the viewer’s perceptions of “normal” reality." (Denise Hawrysio)
